GIRL'S TERRIBLE DEATH.
MELBOURNE, Dec. 28. A terrible death befel Edith Alice Stubbeltv (9), when she was thrown from a, pony and dragged hundreds of yards in a paddock at Wheeler's Hill, 'about 10 miles beyond Oakleigh, this afternoon. •Her body was horribly mutilated, and pieces of clothing were found scattered over a wide area. The girl, who had been living with her grandfather, Charles Hawkesworth, dairyman, of Wheeler's Hill, went out on a pony at 2.30 p.m. to bring cows from a paddock a mile distant. "As the stirrups were too long, she \ rode with her feet in the leathers. When she did not return Wil.iam Hawkesworth, her uncle, went to look for her. He found the pony with the saddle and bridle on, and the body of the girl near a fence 200 yards away. On searching the paddock ho found one shoe with tire strap still buckled. It had evidently \been pulled off her foot. Tho Other shoe: was found near the fence, with the strap broken. Clothing was scattered for yards. From marks on tho fence it appeared as if the gir! was dragged along the ground by one foot for 400 yards.
