RAILWAY ROUTE
ACTIVITY ON COAST ( PEGGING PERMANENT LINE (Special to fh« Herald.) . : - MORERB, this day. Surveyors from the Public Works Department are now at work pegging out the line o# the railway route between Opoutama and Gisborne. They have established a big camp, and their activities are arousing much interest among the settlers, who regard the operations as confirmation of the decision to carry the' railwav line along the coa3t, rather than by the inland route, which has been so strongly advocated. Tho battle of the routes has been followed with close attention by tho settlers in this district, who naturally desire the adoption of the coastal line, which would materially. improve their communication both with Gisborne and with Wairoa and Napier.
Enquiries made to-day at the Public Works office in GisbOrne. failed to substantiate the assumption that the route of the. railway from Wairoa to Gisborne has been definitely decided. The resident engineer, Mr G. W. Albertfion, stated that the pegging of the permanent line did not -necessarily mean that this route was to be followed. The line .on the inland route had been pegged for the greater part: for some ..years, and the activity on the coast .was simply a phase in the establishment of grades that would be followed in the event of the route being settled on. / The Minister had hot made any pronouncement on the question, of the route. ■ .
