Mr. A. L. Haslam,' this year's Rhodes Scholar, is the son of Mr. C. 3ST. Haslam, Rugby street, Merivnle. He is 22 years old. ‘Higf scholastic record is'ope' of the most brilliant in Hew Zealand, and lie is a’ keen and popular sportsman. Ho received liis primary education at Island Bay, Wellington, wiper,e lie secured a’junior national scholarship and went on to Wellington College. He remained tlipre for three years, apd left for Waitaki Boys’ High School with a senior national scholarship to his credit. He was one of Waitaki’s most brilliant scholars, winning a junior university scholarship, second on the Hew Zealand list, and being dux of the school. On leaving Waitaki lie became an undergraduate at Canterbury College, where he continued his meteroic career, gaining his LLB and TXM degrees in his third and fourth years respectively, the latter with first-class honors, He was at this time with the firm of Garrick. Ppwlishaw and Co., solicitors, lin'd for the last two years has bpeu with Mr. C I. Thomas. Mr. Tlaslatp has taken a keen interest in athletics, and has specialised in distance running apd hurdling, at which lie excels. He is a member of the Canterbury Rowing Club and Harewood Golf Club, and has taken a prominent part in the activities of Canterbury Gollogc. being distinguished in debating circles.
