AMATEUR ATHLETICS

G.A.A. ANI) H. CLUB’S MEETING

Three interesting events were contested at the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harriers' Club’s meeting at the Reserve last evening. There was a satisfactory attendance of spectators, and the running and cycling races provided excellent sport, close finishes being witnessed in each event. The results were as follows :

100yds. ladies’ handicap.—Miss Haisman (7£vds.) 1, Miss M. Ryan (Sjyds.) 2, Miss J. Jannsen (14vds.) 2. Time, 112-ssec. Making the most of her handicap, Miss Jannsen led until within a few yards of the tape. She was then passed by Miss Haisman and Miss Ryan, and inches separated the. three placed competitors. 440yds. men’s handicap, second distance for Martin Aislabie Cup.—H. Martin (scr.) 1, L. Barker (30yds.) 2 G. McDonald (scr.) 3. Time, 54 3-ssec. Fourteen runners faced the starter, and all got away well, the scratch men gradually overhauling the field, and running through them in line style. Ton yards from the tape H. Martin assumed the lead, and won by a yard from Barker, with McDonald a similar distance further back, third.

Three-mile cycle handicap, first distance for Rudge Cup.—J. Algie (45yds.) 1, E. Algie (scr.) 2, 11. Davie (205vde.) 3. Time, 3.47 1-5. Davies’was loading by about two yards at the hell, but was- soon passed by the Algie brothers, who rede a great finish up the straight. J. Algie won by a wheel, and Davies was ten yards back, third.
