GISBORNE SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening. Present: Mr. G. Wildish (chairman), Rev. Jas. Aitken, Messrs. A. M. Coleman, Mortimer, 11. 11. DeCosta, Sclnvabe, Nasmith, and Muir. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr. Warner.

The chairman congratulated the Rev. Jas. Ailken on ins election to the position of .Moderator by tlie Presbyterian Synod, and spoke of'the valuable work done by Mr. Aitken amongst the children and for education generally. Mr Aitken suitably responded. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. 'Warner, in connection with Mrs. Warner’s illness. It was decided to eliminate the December and January meetings, the chairman and secretary being empowered to deal with any business arising.

Correspondence from the Hawke’s Bay Education Board regarding subsidies was dealt with, and the Secretary’s action in replying to same was approved. The headmaster reported that iho present roll number was 935, the average attendance for the month being BEO, or 93 per cent, of the average roll number On Novembers and 9 the board’s inspectors were in attendance to conduct, the examination of standard VI candidates for proficiency certificates. Dr. Mercer and Nurse Leo, of (he Health Department, had' visited the school and inoculated against diphtheria 330 children of school age, and a number of children from one to five years of age, who were brought along by their parents. A line collection of Queensland butterflies, mounted in a case, had recently been presented by Mrs. T. Hamilton Jones for (he museum. A plentiful supply of water for the school baths had. (been available during the post month, and the various standards had taken swimming in lieu of physical drill.

A medal, to be presented to the boy .showing the' most progress in school cricket, was received from Mr. T. H. Warner. This will be awarded at the end of the season. The secretary was instructed to writo thanking Mrs. Jones and Mr. Warner for their donations. ,
