OHRISTCHURCH, this day. In tlio Middlotou Hurdles at tlio C.J.O. races yesterday, Axle led over tlio lirst bend from Enare, Guncase, Coastguard and Sayonara. Passing Cutts' the order was Axle, Enare, Bachelor Gay, Coastguard, Guucaso and Nukumai, with Sayonara still in the rear of the field. Axle was still in charge as they raced along tlio back, with Enare, Nukumai, Coastguard and Guncasc handily placed. Rounding the home bend Enare went to the front, being closely followed by Axle, Coastguard, Nukumai, Black Cruiser and Guncasc, with Sayonara moving up. Enare was tlio first over tlio last jump and went on to win by two lengths from .Sayonara, who finished fast and heat Nukumai by half a length for third money. Radiac was fourth and Many Colors next. When .Hie Held in the Criterion Handicap had settled down Lava was showing the war to Licinius, Set Sail, Buovant, Yalani, Nimetic, Circulation, and' Grand Knight. When they straightened out for home Lava was still iu charge, but Licinius then headed her, with Circulation, Buoyant, Grand Knight and Avola tlio best of the others. In the race to the ,iudge Grand Knight wore Licinius down and won by a bead, with Circulation two lengths further away. Avola was fourth and Buoyant fifth. _ Cosmetic early took charge in the Irwell Handicap and led on to the course, proper, with Agrion, Roya Ceres, and French Leave as the nearest attendants. Reaching the stand, Agrion and Roval Ceres headed Cosmetic and after a ding-dong finish between the pair Royal Ceres beat Agrion bv.half a length, with Cosmetic four lengths further away, third. Jericho was fourth, THE DERBY STAKES.
In the New Zealand Derby Stakes Seatoun jumped to the front and led out of the straight, where Commendation momentarily showed in front. Then Pliaola and Countersign went into the lead and raced along the .bach, with Commendation and David Garnek together and then Seatoun and High Gear. They raced thus till the straight was entered, whore the iioici lined out for the final effort. Commendation took charge at tho distance post, with Phaola, Countersign, David Garrick, Hynanna, Seatoun and Hign Gear after'him. Half-way down the straight Commendation drew away fromhis opponents and went on to win in convincing style by three length? from Seatoun, who got up in time to beat David Garrick by a head. Countersign was fourth and Hynanna fifth. Pink Terrace and Beau Geste wore first to show out in the Hagley Handicap, with Haze and Vesperus handy. There was little change at tho end o three furlongs, where Bonhomme and Jarreticro had joined in. Haze and Pink Terrace were showing the way round tho turn, with Bonhomme, Bean Jeste and Vesperus heading the others Pink Terrace drew clear on reaching the straight, and, stalling off a challenge from Beau Gcsto, won by halt a length. Haze was three lengths away two lengths in front of Bonhomme and Vesperus. All started in the Metropolitan Handicap. Star Stranger, who was third favorite, practically ran last all tn.c way Tho field closed up on reaching tho straight and at tho distance there was not much to choose botween Overdrawn. Full Swing, and Desert Glow, with Piuthain and Tanadecs handy. The last-named pair drew away oyer tho last 100 yards, Piuthair beating Tanadecs by a head.: Overdrawn was two lengths back, half a length in front of Desert Glow, with Full Swing 1 In the Eandolph Handicap Solrosc had a good lead at tho entranco to the straight and was several lengths in front of Helen at tho distance. Taboo then put in a strong run and got up to beat Solroso by half a length. Helen was three lengths away, two lengths in front of Peho. PITJTHAIR'S FORM. Piuthair gave R. A.' McKenzie his second win in the Metropolitan Handicap his previous success, being scored with Kilgour five years ago. Piuthair, who is a four-year-old sister to Clarinda, bv Eilbroney, from Black Ada, by All Black, showed useful form last soason. She is only coming to her best/however, and as she is usually doing best at the end of her mces she can be relied on to play a prominent part in oilier long distance events this season.
