MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waikoliu County Council was h«ld to-day, Cr. T. B. Spence presiding. There were also present : Ci's. W* .15. Harding, .1. K'ain, Miles Doyle, A. A. Frazer, and It. Dods. An apology for absence was received from Cr 11. J. F. Tombleson. 'Die New Zealand Forestry League asked that' delegates be appointed to attend a meeting re the formation of a bianch of the league in this district.— Received. The West-land County Council wrote asking support to a resolution urging amendments to the Valuation of Land Act in ivgard to assessments of'standing timber.—H was decided to support the resolution, and write to the Counties' Association accordingly. The Town Clerk, Gisborne, wrote stating that it was proposed, to hold a coi-ferenc<>. to consider the question of obtaining supplies of stone :.:id ailrfed that the council appoint representatives to attend. No action was taken, as the council is at present developing a quarry of its own.
Messrs Judd Brothers asked for improvements to the road near Te Wera. - The engineer stated that the matter had been attended to.
The Gishorne Borough Council wrote giving a list of committees appointed in connection with the jubilee celebrations. Received. The secretary of the New" Zealand Counties' Association advised that applications for exemption from any award in connection with the Dominion Federated Drivers' Union should be made immediately.—deceived, the county having not yet been cited as a party to the award.
The land officer, New Zealand Railways, forwarded for execution deeds giving the council the right to put a. telephone wire across the railway lino near Makaraka. —The deeds were signed and sealed. ENGINER'S DEPORT. The engineer, Mr. A. (!. M. Lucas, reported: — "Motu Riding: The repairing of (he roal between Motu and Motuhora lias now been completed. The work on this portion comprised re-culverting, scarifying, widening, re-metalling and blinding approximately 2% miles, 1100 c.yds. of crushed metal and 380 c.yds. of blinding being used. Some repairs have been carried out on the Motuhora to Matawai section. The grader has been working between Matawai and Rakauroa, but owing to the wet 1 weather experienced in this part, very little progress has been made. The carpenters have now completed the strengthening of the Waiwhero bridge; this bridge should now be good for six or seven years. A man has been engaged cleaning up the Waioeka road. Tenders are called for this meeting for metalling 114 chains of the Motu Valley road spawlcd last summer, and also for straightening, widening, regrading and spawling of 08 chains of the Koranga Hill. (Jtber than this ordinary maintenance has been carried out.
"Waihuka Riding.—Owing to the continued wet weather, it is impossible to get the road between Otoko and Rakauroa in good order. The roller and lorry have been brought to Otoko to complete. Honey's contract, rolling and blinding which will be commenced this week. Men are now engaged regrading and widening at Mahaki in readiness for the metalling. Teams have been mgaged on the Motu front road making a road over the big slip near the racecourse. Good progress is being made with the contract on Poututu deviation, and (lie earthworks should be finished next week. I think it would bo advisable to metal the portion from the present deviation out to the main road whilst the teams are on the- job. Maintenance has been carried out as usual.
"Waipaoa ridiocr: The teams have now cleaned up- Huiarua road for wool carting; arrangements have been made to put in another eight chains of road at the top end. The river road has also been cleaned up for traffic. Other than this maintenance work has been carried out in this riding. Mangatu riding: The contract for metalling one mile of the Mangamaia road is now nearly completed and should be finished this week. During the*month the member for tha riding and myself inspected the Mangahamia road. Maintenance has been carried out as usual.
"Ngatapa riding: Maintenance only has been carried out in this riding. "Kanakanaia riding: Maintenance has been carried out as usual. "Te Karaka riding: So-me repairs were doiie to the decking of the Kaitaratahi bridge, and the culvert as authorised at last meeting .has been attended to. Maintenance has been carried out as usual. "General : Mr. Albertson and I inspected the stone deposits on- the Motu Valley road, and as a result stone will be obtained from Mr. J. Brianfc's for metalling purposes this year. Since last meeting the portable crusher, broke down, and owing to the huge amount of woi-l< w<j have in hand' for- this, T was obliged to order the port straight away; this has now come to hand." The report was adopted.
