WHO SHALL PRESIDE?
TRAM MEETING DISTURBED CR. TODD HECKLED "I would like to ask. on behalf of the ratepayers, why the Mayor is not Js»r siding at this meeting to-night?' said an interject or at the tramways meeting at the City Hall last evening, Councillor Todd took the chair. " "Where is the Mayor?" asked Mr. Todd. "I understand he has another engagement." "Did you ask him to come?" questioned another voice from the back of tliejhall. . "No, I didn't ask him to come," replied Councillor Todd. "No, I didn't, think you would," remarked {he interject or dryly. Councillor Todd changed the. subject, and for a short interval order reigned. Then again" objections were raised as to his procedure. A member of the audi- . ence rose and remarked: "If you are introducing the speakers we will listen to vou; but if you are opening your address on the'trams, we are not going tO -" » i Vi ' This statement was received wiUi applause and loud cries of "hear, hear," from all parts of the hall. "I think it is very infra dig of you not to call on one of the ratepayers to preside at this meeting," continued the same interjector. . Councillor Todd replied that his procedure was on a parallel with that adopted by the Mavor at his meeting. He then continued his address, but was not left in peace for lons, and on one occasion the meeting was in an uproar, the chairman being badly heckled.
