WHY COMMUNISM FAILS

The text of the speech by Trotsky at the Communist conference has been published. He declared that the Opposition considered the industrialisation of the Soviet Russia too slow and believed tliat higher wages must not depend upon increased productivity of labor, but should be a preliminary condition thereto. , . Regarding England, Trotsky held that stabilisation hinged not upon Mr. Baldwin or even upon Mr. Thomas but upon Mr. Pureed. Nevertheless, the Opposition demanded the dissolution 01 the inglo-Rnssiau committee, being unwilling to throw in its lot with Mr. Puroell, i" view of the attitude of the mass of British workers. Trotsky concluded :—''The victory o. Socia'ism' in Soviet Russia can only be achieved in conjunction with the victorious revolution of the European proletariat and there is no reason to believe that one is easier than the other. '

CONFERENCE OPENS

"WHY ARE WE SO HATED?"

Strange scenes were witnessed in the "sold coronation" room of the Kremlin, on the occasion of the opening of the annual confernce of the Central Executive the highest Soviet authority. A thousand dazzling lights, from chandeliers, shone over the 400 delegates of all classes and conditions. Many of the men were collarless, and many of the women were peasants with heads wrapped in woollen shawls'. Ambassadors from France, Italy and Turkey ware also present. The speech of Kalinin president of the conference, was amplified by 12 loud speakers. Instead of attacking the unfncndli ness of British capitalists, Kalinin plaintively asked, "Why are we so hated? Of course they dislike us for helping the miners, but the most lin port ant reason is that we are buildup up Socialism in Russia as a lasting success." . , The Minister for Education appeale for higher pay for teachers, whoso prcs out wages average £3 10s a month.
