TROTTING
NEW ZEALAND CUP CANDIDATES' PERFORMANCES (Special to the Herald.) CITRISTCHURCH, this day. At Aldington on Saturday some of the New- Zealand . Trotting Cup favorites put up great performances. Sheik •went two miles. After covering half the distance he was joined by Delavan • Quest, driven by W. J. Tomlcinson. Sheik defeated Delavan Quest, the Cup horse, by about eight lengths, and the last half was run at a very fa.st clip. Sheik was eased up as the winning pest was readied. The work-out was the best this season and, as the Australian pacer pulled up well, he will have more supporters next Tuesday. Delavan Quest, too, showed that lie is on the top of his form. Immediately following Sheik's performance, Waitaki Girl set out for two miles. At the end of a mile Darknite joined her, but he only went about a furlong when the Gup mare drew away and the saddle horse tailed off. Waitaki Girl paced in brilliant fashion throughout, and she looked in the pink of condition. Over the last half furlong Berry was not at all busy with her, but allowed the pacer to somewhat slow up. Waitaki Girl's work-out was equal to that of Sheik, and both were brilliant performances. t Native Chief set off for a mile and three-quarters, and, moving in his easy free action, did his work without effort. The Cup candidate has gained l a lot of friends since he has arrived at heada darters.
