OBITUARY

MR. FRED PIRANI (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Mr. Fred Pirani, well known throughout, the Dominion as a newspaper proprietor, journalist, and formerly a member of Parliament, died last evening.

Mr. Frederick Pirani was tho son of Mr. H. C. Pirani, editor of the Hawke's Bay Herald, and was born in Melbourne in 1859. He arrived in New Zealand in 1H64. and finished his apprenticeship as a printer with the Wanganui Herald in 1879. In 1891 he purchased the Manawatu Standard, and carried it on with his brother, Mr. D. Pirani, to 1-903. In 1883 he was a member of the Blenheim School Committee, and the following year he removed to Palmerston North, where he held almost every public office, including chairmanship and membership of licensing committees, president of the .Manawatu A. and P. Association, Borongh Council, Land Board, Wellington JSciiool Commissioners, Feilding Fire Hoard, and Wansjanui Education Board for 13 years. From 1893 to 1902 he was member of Parliament for Palmerston North, but retired for private reasons. He contested Hutfc against Mr. Wilford in 1902. Palmerston North acainst Mr. W. T. Wood in 1905. Wanganui against .Mr. Veitch in 1914. and Wellington City npiinsl .Mr. P. Frascr in 1910.
