The first natianl sate oi Red Pods was held to-day when 75 head comprised the catalogue, the entries being drawn from Taranaki, King Country, Hawke's Hay and Manawatu, Buyers were present, from all over the North Island. En fortunately, a big proportion of the cattle did not come forward in,.the condition expected,- and this luck of condition had a great deal to do with the rather dull sale. Where Hie eat lie slu wed quality, however, there was spirited bidding, as was instanced in the ease of the two-year-old heifer "Opatu, No. 6." :which was bought, lor 70gns. by Wilson Bros., who have a. farm north of the Waikato River. "Opatu No. 6" was from the stud of Mr. D. P. McLeod, of Ofealu, Taumarunui. a purchaser at the recent Taumarunui sale who paid the record, price ever given for a Red Poll heifer in New Zealand, 150gus. The next highest price at the sale to-day was realised for Mr. B. W. Harvey's (Waverly) bull "Wairoa Wanderer," which was purchased by Messrs Wright. Stephenson, as agents, for 60gns. PRICES AT WESTFIELD. SMALL SHEEP ENTRY. AUCKLAND, last night. At, Westficld there, was a smaller yarding of beef. Extra choice and prime ox was slightly firmer, other classes being unchanged. Extra choice ox made to 39s per IOOIb, choice and prime 34s lo 365, just killablo 30s t--335, prime voting cow and heifer tu.vf 32s to 36s per 1001 b, just kiliable 27s to 31s 6d. Sheep.—There was a much smaller yarding. Competition was keen throughout, with a decided improvement in prices. The yarding consisted chiefly of shorn sheep. No extra heavy prime wethers were penned. Heavy prime wethers shorn made 2!Js, medium woolly 30s to 335. shorn 23s to 255, light and unfinished woolly 25s to 295, heavy prime ewes shorn 22s to 235. Calves.—There was an average yarding, hut very few good quality calves were penned, and prices were subject to a sharp rise. Eat cattle represented an under supply for butchers' needs, and there was a jump of about 40s per head in value for good beef, and to 35s for medium quality. Fat sheep also tsold better, as did store hoggets. Spring kinibs and fat pigs were cheaper. Store Sheep : Ewe hoggets sold better than hist week by 2s to 2s 6d a head, and ewes and lambs were also in brisker demand.
