GLADSTONE ROAD TRACK
COLT OF RENEWAL. OVER- .025,000. That, tho renewal of the Glad?(one, road tram track: would cost more thau £2S,COD was the contention put forward in a. report presented to the Borough Council last evening by the engineer, Mr. A. Young. Tho report was tho outcome of recent discussion, when councillors expressed tho opinion that tho estimate was too high, but in his report Mr. Young gave comparative figures, which, ho held, clearly disclosed that, his figures were accurate. COST £25,000 The report was as follows: “As instructed at last meeting 1 herewith submit details of estimate for reconstructing Gladstone road tram track in accordance with my report on the tram track dated July 20. The rails will be on concrete slab and asphalt surface. Description Quantity £ Rails in stock 241 tons Cleaning rails 241 tons 500 Handling & carting 241 tons 250 Tic rods & holts 195 chains 897 Platelaying 195 chains .'l9O Excavation 5,740 eu. yds 1,148 Concrete in slab 2,500 eu. yds 14,178 Asphalt surface .10,010 sq. yds 5,005 S £22,368 10% contingencies £2,257 £24,605 5% engineering & supervision £1,230 £25,800 Say £25,000. SIMILAR WORK. I have, given the estimate- for this type of construction as it works out a little less costly than the alternative, of a new and deeper rail on timber sleepers. “Since there has been a good deal of adverse criticism over the estimate it will not be out- of place to compare it. with the cost of similar work done in the borough. If the estimate is calculated on a proportionate basis from what the Feel street, Ormond road track cost, which was done by contract, the result will work out as follows : Ormond road track: Length, 105.9 chains. Contract price £13,617 Gladstone road track : Length, 195 chains. Proportionate price £25,075 To which must be added, cost,of the rods 897 10 per cent, contingencies ... 2,237 5 per cent, engineering and supervision 1,230 Total ... £29,439
