BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of tie Gisborne Borough Council 'was held last evening, there being present- the Mayor, Mr, G. Wildish, and Crs. T. Todd, D. W. Coleman. C. E. Bickford, T. E. Toneycliffe, H. E. Maude, J. N. Bullard,'and L. T. Burnard. The P. and) T. Department wrote stating that in response to. repeated requests it had been decided to instal a slot- telephone in Victoria township.—lt was decided to thank the department for the installation. - , | Messrs. Trucks, Ltd., wrote stating i' that they would be prepared through ! their local company in Gisborne to j supply an up-to-date bus .service for the - town. —It was decided to hand tho letter to the special tramway committee. The Power Board wrote offering to pay half tho cost of lighting the post cilice clock. —It was decided to accept the, offer. The Poverty Bay Power Board, writing with reference to the sale of the electrical undertaking, stated that the board liad appointed Messrs. F. R. Ball, T. Corson, and I. Mil-field as a committee to meet the council’s representatives. As it- was desired! to have the respective valuers present at the meeting the board would advise the council at a later dale j of n suitable time, so as to coincide with the next-visit of the board’s valuer, Mr. H. F. Toogood.—The Mayor said that the position was satisfactory, and the letter was received. Mr. J. It. Kirk wrote inviting the council to be present at the annual celebration of the landing of Captain Ctook in the district. —The Mayor said that it had been the • council’s custom to place a. wreath on the monument, and lie would move that this be done once more.—-This was seconded and carried. Twenty-six ratepayers petitioned asking that the council form and gravel the j footpath from Lyt-ton road to Chalmers road’ along the northern side of Childers road. They further requested the council to complete the metalling ; of McDonald street, and to so alter the culvert at the junction of Chalmers road and Childers road as to make it safe for the traffic that- was increasingly using that- route.—Tho matter wa-s referred to the works committee. REPORTS. The public works committee reported:—“ln accordance with instructions the engineer submitted a- reportgiving his opinion upon the stringency or otherwise of the council’s hv-law in respect to party walls wherein he stated it is inadvisable to alter the same, and cop of such report is attached hereto. “An application from Mr, Woods for continuance of his license in respect, to j his shooting eallcry premises, Gladstone road, until June 30 next, and also to be allowed to continue his skittle alley license to the same date, was under consideration when it was agreed that Mr. Woods’ request be acceded to without, extra fee. But the game of box ball which he is at present conducting withI out a license, must be discontinued immediately.
