SCHOOL SWIMMING
NO CERTIFICATES FOR GISBORNE. The teaching of the art of swimming to the younger generation is one. of tinprincipal works" of the Hawke's Bay Swimming Centre. It has an educational officer; and Mr. H. Lee Bas last season had! a very successful time among che schools of Hawke's Bay. Hawke's Bay's aim has been to bead tho Dominion, and last season it succeeded in doing that, a total of 1187 certificatcsi being awarded, Wangamu being second with 1110. Hastings street school, Napier, with 151, had the honor of beiricr the third school in the Dominion in point of number of certificates issued. In his report to the Hawke's Bay centre of his work among the schools last year, Mr. Le Bas made the following remarks respecting the Gisborne centre. " It is with regret I have to report that no certificates were gained by schools in this district. Owing to the dry summer experienced the baths were not filled, thus depriving the pupils of the opportunity of gaining certificates, and it is to be hoped that adequate provision will be made in this direction in the near future." The figures in connection with the Wairoa District Hich School were as follows: Learners 59, proficiency 25, merit 33, total 117.
