IN HARNESS AT 87
CLERGYMAN’S RECORD REV. JASPER SMYTH (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this clay. The oldest member of the Christchurch Diocesan, Synod, and the oldest Church of England clergyman in New Zealand, the Rev. Jasper Smyth, aged 87, is still in good health. H e is attending the present session of the synod in Christchurch. Next Monday Mr. Smyth will have been 65 years in Holy Orders. He is an M.A. -of Trinity College, Dublin. lie has lieon vicar of several parishes in Canterbury for over 45 years, and since his resignation as Vicar of Lincoln in 1915 he has faken temporary duty in every diocese in New Zealand.' Though lid is now in his 88th year, he is still in harness, and helping his brother clergy every Sunday at Holy Communion, and other services. Mr. Smyth is well-known not only in Canterbury, but throughout the ‘Dominion, and he may lie constantly seon in Christchurch riding a, bicycle! Last year his cyclometer registered 1870 miles from January, 1925, to January, 1926, a record for a man over 87 years of age.
