SOLDIERS’ PENSIONS
DEDUCTIONS OBJECTED TO FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ PETITION (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The executive officers of friendly societies to the number of 140, representing thousands of members throughout New Zealand, have petitioned the House, through Mr. J. S. Dickson, asking that the sum paid by friendly societies to soldier members as a result of members’ prudence and forethought should not, lie considered as income.
Complaints have been received by the societies that incapacitated soldier members when in receipt of an economic pea'sion granted for war disabilities have had the amounts received from their society deducted from their pensions.
The petitioners claim that such deductions penalise thrift and discourage the benefit work of friendly societies.
