LATE MAJOR PITT.
FUNERAL CEREMONY. Another pioneer of the Poverty Bay district was Ini. 1 , to rest in the Tam hem cemetery yesterday afternoon, when ihe last rites were performed over the mortal remains ol the late Major Cholwell Dean Pitt, a distinguished militia officer, and a man of some standing in the commercial life of Gisborne. The veteran was accorded a military funeral, and the high respect and esteem which he commanded .was indicated by the large cortege -which followed the hearse. Representatives of all classes of the community were present, and ihe sei-i vice was a most impressive one. At the gates to the cemetery the carriage was met by a tiring party of Territorials under the command of Captain P.tnge, and the guard of honor marched with arms reversed on either side of the carriage to the graveside, A strong and touching service was conducted by ration H. Cache. the coffin was covered with many beaut mil lloral emblems from friends from all pans of the district, and the following car was laden with wreaths. Hie paH-bearers were -Messrs. V. Ghemll. A D. Shenitf. K. Scott. V. d. Pennon, and E. R. Murphy. Af'.oi the lowering of the coffin three volleys TOO fired over the grave, and thi Last Post was sounded.
