Thil three were injured. : . ■ The driver of the leading engint, had a miraculous escape from death, » his engine would have fallen ever, J the main engine pulled the drawbriiß right on to his engine, and, althoughl lost the tender wheels, the pilot eng! never left the road. He added that! the train had been composed of ordl ary passenger- ears there would hr! been hardly any survivors. As it wl the special steel frame cars did n buckle, thus saving many lives. 1 The reason for the trains leaving (I tails is unknown. Officials emphasis! tho fact- that- the accident was "i! caused through the viaduct collapsu! 'Tlie train had passed the wooden -v! duct, which is about 400 ft. from a stl bridge that spans the River Hunttl when it left the line and ploughed 1 the permanent way, seriously damagil the viaduct. A single line runs acrJ the viaduct and bridge,* and slopes do« towards- the river,’ but tho grade I slight and the line is straight. I The .Minister of Works and Railwal states that apparently the derailmel occurred before the viaduct was reachel The question of tlie safety of wood! viaducts was raised in tlie Assembly 1 December last, when the Commission! of Railways stated he had adopts bridges of standard design, composed I brick, masonry or concrete, with a stel superstructure, which were replaciil wooden bridges, as the latter go out I repair. % I A report of the disaster is being prl pared for tho Commissioner.
