Thci contract for the erect inn of a handsome new block of buildings aj the corner of Hohson and Victoria streets for the* Manchester Unity Oddfellows, to include hall accommodation and eleven shops, has been let to the Fletcher Consi ruction Co. at £45,C00.
Thirteen tenders were received., The completci building is to In- finished in eighteen months, but the contractors undertake to make the shops available for occupation in nine months from tile commencement of their work.
The main hall, which will he situated on the ground floor, with an imposing entrance from the Hobsoii street frontage. and a stago at the further end, is intended to seat about 700 people, including 200 in the gallery. The flooring will he laid on a plan novel to Auckland in that it will be of Canadian birch with the joists mounted on rubber blocks, giving if a special elasticity for dancing purposes. ■
