IMMIGRATION.

'Per PrfßS Associntio" N'LW PLYMOUTH, this day. Addressing the Chamber of Commerce last night Mr H. D, Thompson, UnderSecretary for Immigration gave an emphatic contradiction to thei statements that & largo number of Government immigrants had returned to England and others were swelling the ranks of the local unemployed 1 . ' Not 5 per cent returned to England! and of the large number introduced during the last few weeks, everyone was sent to employment or to friends, about 65 per crtnt of thosa going to the country and the balance, to the towu.s, being artisans or tradesmen. He expressed satisfaction, also, with the -working of the Chamber's scheme of introducing public school boys, which had proved such a marked 1 success. ITo saw no reason why the Dominion should reduce its immigrants below 10.000 per annum, who could bo readily absorbed, but would not at present advocate increasing the quota.
