AN ILLEGAL BET.
CONSTABLE STRIKES DOUBLE, THE BOOKMAKER FINED. At the Waihi Magistrate's Court John Jt'ivac, billiard saloon keeper, of Waikino, was charged with keeping'a common gaining house. Senior-Sergeant McLean appeared lor the police. Accused pleaded guilty. The- Sergeant stated that accused's place of business being under suspicion, a constable' was brought' up from Wellington. This constable took a double on the Taeroa races with accused. The constable was successful in selecting both horses, and received the sum of £lO. . Amongst the documents given up by accused was a book containing 70 or 80 names of Waikino residents, also a double chart, continued the Sergeant. Accused had admitted that the book referred to betting transactions. Counsel addressed the Court in extenuation of the offence, and the magistrate, in giving his decision, said he would take into consideration the good character of accused, and the fact that it was .his first offence, also that he carried on ,in a small way. A fine of £io, with costs, was imposed.
