RUATORIA NOTES.
(Own Correspondent.) Oil.— Oil: is more or less the subject here, and the site of the works a real week-end resort for visitors and residents. The one thing certain about i his enterprise is that oil whelher-or-no, we are getting, and likely to get, a good deal of “gas.” Rotukautuku bridge.—Final touches are being put to the bridge andi it ia quite an imposing structure. The great pity is that it cannot be put to greater use during the next year. Speeding motorists. —Once before 1 made mention regarding speeding cars through this township, and it is about timo the nuisance was put a stop to. When troilMo comes, it is to be hoped that the speeding cars come off worst instead of, as usual, some poor innocent. Car and 1 tracks are here to stay, but that does not signify that they should tear along without reason or regard to the safety of the general public, who after all, in this place, generally look upon tho roads as conveniences for themselves, seeing ' that they • contribute largely to their upkeep. ■lt is -not-, from my experience, the cars owned by local residents who attempt ,to break the speed limits. Influence' of -pictures.—During last week we were treated to two good pictures in the local picture house, “Dante’s Jnferao”' and • “Quo Vadis.” Perhaps if we' had more of. this class and less of the-“Wild-West” stunts, such crimes as the recent robbery under arms would disappear, as it is quite evident that the.“get-aways” in the pictures do not happen- in this part of the world.
