SUCCESSOR TO LORD BYNG.
TTTFJ GOVERNOR, OF CANADA. MANY NOTABLE MEN SUGGESTED. TORONTO, Nov 2S.—Baron Byng's term as Governor-General of Canada, ex pires next year and a good deal ol irresponsible discussion as to his successor is proceeding. Names most prominently mentioned are those of Earl Haiiv. Earl Beatty, or some member ot the Royal family, perhaps the Duke ot York or Prince Henry, whose coaching in affairs has led to the surmise that some post overseas is in view.
Earl Haig, when approached, intimated that while honored by the report, he felt, at 64, like a rest. In connection with Earl Beatty, the fact that ho has an American wife has been men tionedi as a factor. The most recent rumor is that a Canadian, perhaps Sir Robert Borden, a former Prime Minister, or Mr Justice Anglin, will get the post. Such an appointment would break all precedents, but would be popular with many Cana dians.
No doii'bt the names that are being suggested from time to time are put out as "feelers." Formerly it was the practice for the British Government to make the appointment without consultation with anyone in Canada, but perhaps on the recommendation of some one in London who was, supposed to be in touch with Canadian opinion. Now it is Understood 1 the Canadian Government is always consulted. An announcement is soon due, although a, prolongation of the present political uncertainty might cause Lord Byng to reconsider his former decision not to acquiesce in a recommendation from the Canadian Government that his term be extended.
