FATAL NOSE DIVE.
LOSS OF BRITISH MYSTERY ’PLANE. BRITAIN OUT OF THE RACE. - * (Router’s Telegram.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 24. A Baltimore message states that Britain’s so-called “mystery ’plane, ' super-marine Napier S 4, was completely wrecked wficii a series of wing ilutteis and side slips during the preliminary navigability trial in connection with the Jacques Schneider international seaplane trophy led to a nose dive into Chesapeake Bay, after which it turned over.
■ The pilot, Captain Henry Baird, wearing a lifebelt, cleared the wreckage as it sank, •••. His brother pilot., Captain Hubert Bail'd, tossed a con'd lifebelt from his .’plane, after .which tho patrol boat rescued Captain Baird, who was dazed and unable,.to explain the occurrence. Captain Baird is in bod, the doctors ‘fearing pneumonia. He had been ill several...'days, and only left his bed daily tb fly a few minutes. VANCOUVER, Oet. 24.
A message from Baltimore states that Bert Hinkler, Melbourne, reserve pilot of the British Schneider, cup team, will be given a chance to take his GlosterNnpier seaplane into the international race on Saturday. Five opposing American and Italian pilots signed a petition asking that lie lie allowed to qualify before the race. The referee, Mr Ericson, agreed to stop. If Hinkler qualifies, hi< ’plane will be the substitute for the super-marine Napier S 4, which crashed on Friday. A Baltimore message announces that the Shneider race was postponed until Sunday, owing to stormy weather. Hinkler failed, to qualify on Saturday, owing to liis engine stalling, frustrating the British plan to secure a substitute for the crashed machine. VANCOUVER.. Oct. 24.
Weather permitting, the Schneider race will be held on Monday instead ol Sunday.
