PROHIBITION ON SHIPS.

THE AMERICAN VISITORS.

(Special to tho Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day

Intoxicating liquor is strictly torbidden on all the vessels of the American fleet, and any men citMght bringing it on board are liable' to a severe punishment. Prohibition lias boon in force in the American Navy since 1914, not since the coming into operation of the Volstead law in 1918, as is generally believed. The conduct of the men while at Melbourne is spoken of highly by the officers, who state that very little trouble was experienced. Some of the men, as was to be expected, took too much liquor when first they got ashore, but sore heads ns a result taught most of them a lesson which they will long remember. The Melbourne public, nceordiitg to the officers of the fleet, was specially pleased with the conduct of the sailors.

Apparently anticipating a Licit harvest of gold when the Sailors got shore leave yesterday, the proprietor of on© ot the Lyttelton hotels was busily engaged placarding bis windows with flip word “bar.” In tlio morning a Wag remarked, while watching the signs going up. that if the licensee was an enterprising man be would have substituted the word “saloon” instead, .in order that the nature of bis business should not be misunderstood by the visitors.
