ANTHRACITE COAL WORKERS

NEW YORK, August 10
A telegram from Atlantic City, New Jersey, says the hope that tlie anthracite voal operators and miners might reconcile their differences in time to avert suspension of work on September 1 has faded. Mr. John Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers, informed Mr. Samuel Warrincr, chairman of the Operators’ Conference, that further negotiations are useless .until the operators abandon their opposition to the wages increases and the adoption of the checkoff system.
