WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.
At tho ordinary meeting of the above, held at Waipiro Bay, the . following were present: Crs. A. W. Kirk (chairman), F. .T. Williams, ,T. M. Reedy, and J. Woodford. Incoming correspondence was dealt with as follows:
From the Inspector of Stock, Gisborne stating that he will be pleased to co-operate with the Council in the matter of the control of the blackberry pest, and is prepared to despatch a noxious weeds inspector to take action against defaulters.—Or. F .T. Williams proposed that the inspector be thapked for his letter and be sent a list of names of occupiers upon whose .land blackberry is growing, and that the inspector be asked to take immediate steps, owing to the lateness of the season, and get the blackberry cut and try to persuade owners to follow up the cutting by •poisoning.—Carried. From the Waikohu County Council, asking the Council to reconsider their decision in the matter of blackberry eradication.—The chairman proposed that the Waikohu County Council be informed that this Council does not see its way to alter its decision iu (he matter.
From the Public Trustee, regretting that he has no funds available for a loaa of £BOOO for machinery purposes. —Cr. F. ,T. Williams proposed that the Minister of Finance be written to and the Council's position explained to him, and it he pointed out that the Council is anxious to fulfil its responsibilities in regard to main highways construction, but is unable to raise the money through the usual channels. Therefore the Council would like to suggest that the Government take stops to raise a sum sufficient to meet the requirements of local bodies requiring loans for main h ighways construction. —Carried.
From the State Advances Office, slating that with the exception of the workers’ dwellings’ loan of £'>ooo, all other loans granted had been uplift-ed.—-The chairman proposed that the superintendent be informed that there is still £SOOO not yet lifted of the Wniapii main road and bridge loan, and that he be given a statement of the amounts actually received. —Carried. From the Matakaoa Comity Council, in reference to the alteration, of the county boundary and advising that they agree to the suggested date for the new boundary to. take effect from April 1, 1026. •From the Resident Engineer, asking for the Council’s contribution (£i Hid approximately) of the estimated cost of the lirst; contract for a section of of the Rotokautuku-Tikit iki road. — Civ F. J. Williams proposed that the Resident Engineer be written to, and that it be pointed,out to him the difficulty in which the Council is placed owing to not being able to raise a loan, and that as the Council would have to overdraw on their general account for the amount, they would prefer to wail until the money is actually required for payment of instalments ilue to the contractor.
From the chairman, Main .• Highways Board, a telegram in reference to the grant of £750 for the KaiInanga road and stating that the Resident Engineer is being instructed in the matter. —Received.
From the. chairman of the Main .Highways Board, acknowledging the Council’s telegrams in reference, to mo,tor lorry regulations and that the Council’s representations
, will be carefully considered. —Rej ceived. j In regard to the letting of contract No. 20/24, Or. Reedy proposed that the action of the chairman and engineer in accepting the tender of Poriltapa Awatere for this contract be confirm- , ed. —Carried. Following a letter from Mr. A. B. I Williams, Cr. Williams proposed that the Council calls applications for a road overseer at a salary of ,£350 per annum, and that he be supplied with a motor car.—Seconded by Cr. Reedy and carried. Two eating house licenses were granted, one to Mrs. Johnson, and one to Hakopa Hacrewa. j The sanitary inspector’s report, was ! read and considered, after which the Council went, into committee to open and consider tenders, j On resuming the chairman announc- | cd that Mr. Tlios. Flynn’s tender for ■ contract No. 2/25 (25s per hundred feet for timber and £2 10s per ton l'or iron) had been accepted; Mr. J. H. Harris’ tender for contract No. 1/25 (£600) had been accepted; Mr. J. 11. Harris’ tender for contract, 17/24 (£250) had been accepted. Tenders for the Makatota bridge were hold over for further consideration. The engineer’s report was read and considered, and the engineer was instructed to take legal proceedings against breakers of the chain by-law. Matters relating to the repairs of various roads were discussed. It was decided to write to the District, Engineer andiask that the work of erecting the Waitekeo stream bridge be hurried on. Accounts amounting to* tlie sum of £417!) 18s 2d were passed for payment.
