EXPANSION OF TRADE.
SMALL BUT DEFINITE. (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) LONDON, March 1. Reviewing the state of ,trade generally, tho newspaper Economist says: “Duv ing January there was a small but definite expansion. The advance, however, has not been fully maintained! dut--ing the present month. There is less unemployment than a year ago, but the figures are still very high. The expansion of trade lias not been sufficient to make a substantial impression, and there are large numbers still to be absorbed into employment. That progress ha 6 n<jit been more rapid is due primarily to the absence of any forward movement embracing all the more important industries at any given time. Each in turn tends to have periods in improved trade, but, as long as the others languish, the nett result is unsubstantial.
