WELLINGTON TRAMWAYS.
SHOULD THEY BE EXTENDED? TRACKLESS BUSSES SUGGESTED. (Siieoial to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. Should Wellington lay any more tramway tracks? Tins question lias reached an important, staga with (lie City Council, which discussed it briefly last night. A City Ratepayers’ Association submitted a lengthy resolution, urging the Council not only to stop laying further tram track extensions, but also to remove many existing tracks, substituting trackless electric busses as being more convenient, and loss troublesome to other traffic. The eliainna.ii of the Tramways Committee brought before the Council the question of re-laying the Oriental Bay tramway, serving an important residential district with scenic attractions, lie stated tbit- lliet cost of removing the track would bo great. A 24-foot strip of bitu mon was going round the Parade, and the cost of renewing (lie track would equal the cost of paving llte mad from kerb to kerb. This would make an enormous difference to (lie Parade, which was entirely a residential area, and be asked that the Council should give special consideration to the facts and de cide whether the liho should be renewed or whether a bitumen road should !, e put down, 11 io peirinairiont way abandoned, and a. trackless tram rim Loin the Bay to Courtenay Place. A councillor: I. think that I lie position justifies a special meeting of the committee concerned. It.should he held at once. The Mayor: That’s all very welj. but where is the money to come from? Or. Forsyth: The cost of renewing tha track, 1 am assured by officers, would lio more than that, of putting down n bitumen road, Ci*. Burns thought 1 bar the matter was ono equally for the Works Committee mid' the Tramways Committee. It might be advisable to call a meeting of the whole Council. They should have a full meeting and obtain a report from the. engineer oil the subject, of bus and tram.
The Mayor: I think that, the matter is one for tlie Tramways Committee. Tho Council passed on to ihc consideration of other business.
