EAST COAST TOUR.

DISTRICT POSSIBILITIES KNOWN. CHAT WITH MR. C G. BEOORE. The suggestion recently made by tho Hon. A. T. Ngnta, that a business 'men’s tour of the Coast should be. carried out, was mentioned to-day by the president of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, Mr. C. G. Bloore. He said he thought that tho idea, was quite* a. good one, tut. felt that as far as the, Chamber of Commerce was concerned the majority of the members had visited flic Coast at various times on business, and were (bus fairly cognisant with its most, pressing needs. He would he- quite prepared to support tho proposal if a, section of the members had not made the trip and desired to do so, and Ihe Chamber was at a!t times only too ready to give any assistance to proposals emanating from the Coast. For years past the Chamber had stressed the need for the Government taking over the Coast road, and they had also assisted Coast settlers by arranging better steamer facilities. The Chamber was thoroughly alive to the possibilities of tho fertile East Const, a,nd also knew the disabilities under which many of the settlers lived and worked. They were keen I to see the Coast developed, and were prepared at all times to assist,—in, fact they welcomed any suggestions from Coast residents for tlie 'betterment of conditions there.

Speaking with regard to the more urgent needs of the Coast, Mr. Blooro said that he regarded the need for subdivision as the most- pressing requirement of all. Oiu> could not help but ho struck, when travelling on the. Coast, try the distance between homesteads. Closer settlement would mean a. greatly increased, population, more eliicient working of (he land, and more prosperity for both the country and the town. The handicaps tinder which Coast seittlers had worked for years, in respect. of bad roads, was gradually being removed, and tho bridging of I he Waiapu would serve to bring the northern portion of the Coast still further in touch with Gisborne.
