OPOTIKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following matters of local interest weie dealt witli at the hist meeting of the Opotiki County Council: - Waitaugirua road.—A letter from MrW. D. Lysnaj.' concerning a road to his block was .received- The chairman said the engineer sent some men to do work o*ll the road, but they were ''collared" for shearing. It wae decided to reply accordingly, and to state that the work will be proceeded with as soon as men are available. Main highways.—A letter was received from the Main Highways Board. In reply to a question the c)iainna.n sajd the Council was responsible for the maintenance of main highways in the county, and received one-third of the cost from the Board. It was .proposed to appoint an overseer to assist the engineer. Cr. Watsftn said a suitable overseer would be a, good asset. Landslips on the Pa kill i and Tutaetoko roads have prevented the settlors from carting their wool into Opotiki for shipment, according te a. statement that was made by the chairman (Mr. J. H. fteid). The Council decided to refer thp matter to the engineer for attention. Three tenders were receivetl for the final contract in connection with the formation of the Opape deviation of the Hast Coast road'. They were as follows: llerewini £159, P. Withers £134 13s 6d (accepted), W To Han £159 14s 4d. The engineer said ho would call for tenders for the Hawai and Torero bridgeo as (,0011 as the plans are prepared. The chairman said they should keep the tractor and grader going every dav and all day.
