CROCERS AND SHOP ASSISTANTS

GISBORNE UNION WANTED

Gisborne grocers and shop assistants have decided upon the formation of an industrial union of their own to control conditions in Gisborne. Application was recently made for registration with the Registrar of Industrial Unions at Wellington. Advice has now been received, intimating that, under tlifi provisions of the Act, tho registrar may refuse to register an industrial union in any case where he is of opinion Dial, in tho same locality, or industrial district, and connected with tho .samo industry, there exists an industrial union to winch tho members of such applicant, union might conveniently belong. Tho registrar of industrial unions reojuesls information why it is not convenient, for members of the, new Gisborne Grocers' and Shop Assistants' Union to belong to either the Auckland Grocers' Assistants' Union, or the Auckland Retail Shop Assistants' Union.

The position was explained to a Herald representative to-day hy the secretary of (he new union, who stated that hitherto there had been no such union in Gisborne, Consequently these employees came under tho Auckland district, and bad been put under the Auckland award. Seeing that there were now about 300 employees here, it was felt that the time had arrived when they should have a union to control their own conditions. Difficulties had arisen, for instance, over holidays, and it was considered that they should not be dictated to by anybody at Auckland who did not appreciate local conditions. A difference had occurred over the observance of Labor day during Show week. Although 283 voted for Wednesday (Show day) and only 14 for Monday, an Auckland union official had vetoed tho Wednesday proposal. In view of this and other matters the Gisborne employees intended to insist upon the registration of the Gisborne Union. A meeting in this connection will he held at the City Hall at 8 o'clock this evening, when a good rally of employees is requested.
