FIRE AT HANGAROA.
12-ROOMED HOUSE GUTTED
Further particulars of the fire which completely gut led the 12-roomcd house- of Mr. T. J. Harris at Hangaroa early this morning, show that the outbreak was discovered at about 1.30 a.m.. whom (he flames already had a good hold. At the time all the occupants were in bed. and when Mrs. Harris was awakened by the noise she. at first thought it was another earthquake. On going out, however, she discovered thai, a linen press, which surrounded the hoi water cistern, was in (lames. An titfempt was made to quell the outbreak with buckets of watar. hut without success, and within a few minutes the flames had got a firm hold. Practically none of the furniture, which was valued at over £IOOO, was saved. The origin -of the outbreak is a mystery-, as there had been no fire burning in the house since 7 o'clock !*ast evening. The building was insured for £2OOO, and (lie furniture for £9OO, both policies bring in the Union Office. Mr. Harris will he a heavy loser above the insurances.
