VISIT TO GALLIPOLI.
MOTHER’S LONG PILGRIMAGE
An interesting account of a visit to her soil’s grave at- Gallipoli was given by Mrs. J. O’Donnell, of Auckland, at n. meeting of the Southern Cross League.
Mrs. O’Donnell said that when tJie expressed her intention of making the journey, slip was advised from the High Commissioner's Office in London that itwould be very difficult to reach Gallipoli. However, she crossed Europe, and landed at Chanak, after experiencing some (.rouble in acquainting the Turkish officials of her intentions. Permission was eventually granted her to land at Maidos, on Gallipoli, to visit her son’s grave. After a. rough journey over the Peninsula Mrs. O’Donnell visited 32 cemeteries, and her visit was the first made by a New Zealand mother to these battlefields. Mrs. (FDonncTl paid a heavy war toll, another eon having fallen in France, while a third was wounded.
