FIVE KILLED IN A MOTOR DISASTER.
DRIVER ACCUSED OF MURDER
ST. JOHN'S (Newfoundland), Sept. 16.—Four British otticers anc( a civilian were killed here last night when a motorcar containing a party of seven and driven by Mr. Leonard Reid, the son of the late Sir William Duff Reid, crashed into two officers in the street, and then plunged over an embankment, killing three of the occupants. Mr. Reid has been arrested on a charge of murder.
The names of the dead are: —Lieut.Commander Denys Patrick O’Callaghan ; Lieutenant Edinund Q. Burrows, of the light cruiser Constance: Captain Gerald Whittv, Newfoundland Regiment; Lieut. King, Royal Air Force; Mr. George Harrison, of Chatham, New Brunswick. Tlie two naval officers and Mr. Harrison wer'fe returning with Mr. Reich from a visit ,to the special service squadron, when the ear ran into and killed Captain Whitty and. 1 Lieutenant King. After striking the men and throwing them a number of feet from the highway, the car plunged over an embankment near by, killing Lieut.-Commander O’Callaghan, Lieutenant Burrows, and Mr. Harrison, who were inside. Four other people in the car narrowly escaped death.
