AUTHORITY TO SELL LAND
(AN CO-OPERATE WITH COUNCIL.
Tho Turanganu-i Public Library, which ..wily the section of land' in Lowe street adjoining ihe Masonic hotel has been authority to mortgage or sell the land, the money so raised to be uppiu-c, ini- the purpose of acquiring land and erecting' buildings, for the purpose of a public library. The section in Lowe .street was originally acquired as the site of the public tibiary, and for many years the librar was actually situated there. When the building at the corner of Gladstone road and Peel street was, built in 1905, the library was shifted to those premises, and' has remained ever since Some, belter provision is rapidly becoming rieces,saiy, and with a, view, to future expansion, tlie Library Committee applied to the Government for authority to sell or mortgage their freehold section in Lowe street, which is leased for a fairly long term.
The committee ha.s. however, gone farther, and lias, obtained the necessary consent to join with the Borough Council .md enter into a joint, arrangement for the purchase of land and buildings for a public library.
Provision is tints made for the committee acting in conjunction with lho Borough Council in the matter, and it must- be admitted that - such a provision is a very wise one. The town is rapidly expanding, and it is necessary that- tlie library should grow iwth it. The confessions now granted' to the. committee are -such as to provide for any expansion which may be necessary for many years to come. .
