THE DAVIS CUP. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received August 2, 10 a.in.) NEW YORK, August 1. The Australians defeated China in the Davis cup preliminary. (Received August 2, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, August I. The Australians won the doubles, 6—l, 6—2, (i —0, and thus defeated China. Patterson and Wood forced Wei and Huang. The latter is a lefthander and has a volcanic drive. Once again the Chinamen could not cope with Patterson’s service, and moreover, the Australians placed their returns, where their opponents were unable to reach them. Huang showed he was a player of promise, but in attempting to put a top spin on the shots drove, them low. In the second set the Australians were at the top of their form, Woods’ c,ross : cdurt strokes being both brilliant and effective. In the third set the Chinamen frequently made a fatal mistake of lobbing into Patter Sou’s overhead smashes, that never failed. The Australians profited from greater experience.
