ELECTRICITY FOR. TOLAGA

DIRECT CURRENT INSTALLATION

Tho Uawn. County Concil is now about to call tenders lor the installation of electric supply to Tolaga Bay. The plant wilt be run by an internal combustion engine, and the power generated will he .sufficient Lo supply all the needs of the township. The service will ho run on a. direct current basis, and the plant will he very similar to that used in Gisborne, though of course on a much smaller scale.

The progressiveness of the Uawa County Council is demonstrated by the fact that Tolaga Bay will he one of the •smallest, townships in New Zealand .to have adopted electricity and installed its own plant. The engine will be from 40 to 50 horse power, and a storage battery will he used. At present only the town will be lighted, but current could be extended to a. mile radius, and the. plant will cope with the needs of the toiynsliip for some time to come. The powerhouse will be erected in Cook Street, not far from the present Council chambers.

The installation will provide power for private) use, and the hall and the new hospital will! both be electrically lighted. In addition there will be 17 streets lamps. The whole scheme has been arranged with a view to the eventual change over lo alternating current, when hydro-electric power is available.Tho.' voltage will he 230, and in’the event of a, change over tlie only renewals necessary will he the meters and the generators. Tenders will he closing about the end of August, and much of the preliminary work will he done before the end of the year. It is hoped to have the whole plant ready for use before next winter.
