AUSTRALIANS EASILY DEFEAT 1 CHINAMEN. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received August 1, 11.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 31. In the Davis Cup preliminary between Australia and China, Patterson defeated "Wei, 6 —l, 6 —2, 6—3. There was only a handful of spectators. The .Chinaman was totally unable to handle Patterson’s service, and first ran up courageously but ineffectively to the net, and then, took' to the baseline without success. Wei’s small stature was a handicap against the Australian’s great reach and coihmand of the court. Patterson became- temporarily erratic and inaccurate in the second set, but it made little difference. In the tlin'd Wei tried to change the pace, and gave intermittent crosscourt, shots, which made his 1 opponent race about a little, but. did not seriously discomfort him. (Received. August 1. 1 p.m.V NEW YORK, July 31. Wood defeated 1 Kong, 6—o, 6—i. 6—2. Tho match began amidst lowering clouds. Rain seemed a matter of moments. Kong was larger than his team mate; also stroked move vigorously. He was fearfully nervous and erratic, nn(l wholly unable to touch Wood’s services without, driving out. In the second set he sometimes scored surprisingly by breaking through (lie, service, with fine back-hand strokes or crosscourt strokes, but, made many double faults. Both men played a hack-court- ghme, in which the Australian was superior. In the third set Wood frequently passed Kong, who like Wni attempted sporadically to play up to the net.
