STORY OF A CAR.
Horace John Anderson was charged at the Hastings Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, before Mia R.. W. Dyer, S.M., with on or about July 1, at Hastings, attempting to obtain a motor car, valued at £275, from Lionel Victor Zala by false pretences. He was also charged with, on March 27, at. Wellington., failing to comply with the term of his pl'obati ona ry license. Detective Fitzgibbon. stated that the accused went to the Magnus Motor Garage and informed the manager, Mr. King, that he was authorised by Stevens and Go., of Gisborne, to purchase a car to enable him to go round the country erecting wireless plants. Mr. King brought, the accused into touch with Mr. Zala, who had a. car for sale, and after a trial run -the accused said he was satisfied with- the car and an agreement of purchase and sale was signed. Delivery of the car was to be made on July 3, but before that date Mr. Zala ascertained, from Stevens and Co., that accused had no such, authority from them. He also learned that accused had allegedly tried the same game in Napier, so he refused to deliver the car. The detective produced a. statement in writing signed by the accused, in which lie admitted that hei was not representing Stevens and Co., and had no authority from them to purchase a car. The accused pleaded not (guilty and was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Napier Supreme Court.
