RACING SMASH.

JOCKEY INJURED, MOUNT DESTROYED. BRISBANE. June 4.—P O’Sullivan a jockey, was injured, and the racehorse Acre had to lie destroyed as tiie result of a sensational smash at Ascot racecourse this afternoon. A few seconds after the start of the Sires’ Produce Stakes, which was contested by a field of 17. a pony attached'to a sulky* in the carriage enclosure took fright and bolted, and jumped the fence dividing the enclosure from the course. The pony got free, and galloped close to the rails in the opposite way to which the race was being run. It was not until the horses were approaching tiie home turn that the leading jockeys became aware of the pony tearing towards them. Many riders tried to avoid a- collision, some easing their mounts considerably ; while others pulled out to the other side of the course. Chcviotdalc and Acre were in the lead, and with a resounding crash the bolting pony and Acre (ridden by O’Sullivan) met almost head on. Both came down, and Highland T(iibury), Overcast (Conquest), and'Playfrix (Tooliey) toppled over them. A great crowd immediately rushed to the scene of the smash. The only rider who was badly injured was O’Sullivan, whose collar-bone, right forearm, and ankle were fractured. Tiie others escaped with a shaking. Acre was the onlv horse injured.
