WHITE ISLAND.
REMARKABLE CHANGES
A visit was paid to White Island last week bv .Major Keiit-Jolrnston, repre sentative of the White Island Company, with the object of looking for a. suitable spot for the erection of a, jetty which will facilitate the despatch o' fertilisers from the island.
Remark-aide changer have taken place since the previous Visit (states the Guar diati). On the former occasion the valley was level, but there were mime rout large mounds of rock, and other debris distributed over flic',surface, giving it ar uneven appearance. On the Cc-asion of this latest visit, however, it wrs foioio that these large mounds had entirely <1 is appeared, while the surface of tiro valley was higher near the landing place and sloped down towards the craters. This leads to the surmise that another lake will probably he formed in the vicinity of the blowholes. Tt was also l observed that the thousands, of gannets that inhabited anethei part of the island have disappeared, only two of these birds being seen.
