GISBORNE LAND DISTRICT.

A. VEAL'S PROGRESS,

45,000 ACRES OPENED UP

The Gisborne Lund Hoard has now completed the first year of its existence, and the preseirt is an opportune time to survey the work done during the year, and find to what extent its existent o has been justified. The Gisborne. land district comprises land taken from the Hawke's .Hay and Auckland land districts, and the- local oflice came into being on April 1, 1923. The meeting just passed, therefore, marks the first anniversary of the Boaid.

During the year the Board dealt with a total of 5C4 eases of all descriptions, and it is significant that the cases dealt with at the first meeting numbered 8, and these at the meeting just concluded numbered 79. This gives some idea of the growth of the work throughout the district, but this is still further apparent when it is known that the revenue for the year amounted to £102,474.

During the year, eight blocks of land in the district have been .surveyed and opened up for selection, a total of 45.397 acres having been thus offered. The blocks so opened arc scattered from end to end of the iand district, and include tho Tahora block of 13.C00 acres, ,the Waipiro block of 75C0 acres, the Tapatu block of 6C47 acres near Hicks Bay, and other smaller selections in the Wairoa and Kanaka uaia districts. It will finis be seen thai the Gisborne Land Board has fully justified its existence and that a considerable amount of valuable work has been accomplished during the year. The Commissioner of Crown Land's. Mr. V. I. Blake, and the other officers of the department are to be congratulated upon the l year's showing. There is no doubt that the operations of the Board will continue to grow year by year and that the results in future years will show that the constitution of Gisborne as a separate entity was fully justified.
