OBJECTIONS TO RATING.
RIVER BOARD'S JURISDICTION
iper Press Association.' BLENHEIM, this day
A case of great interest to River Board ratepayers throughout New Zealand commenced in the Magistrates Court to-day, the occasion being the hearing of over 200 objections to a ratine classification scheme of the River Board with jurisdiction over the greater part of the Wairau Plain, including Blenheim, more especially as it affects the higher areas recently added to the board's district. A curious feature of the case is that the board's rating for last'year was invalid because it tailed to classify according to the statute, and the* clause in the'Finance Bill just passed in the House validates that rating, despite petitions to the Minister, and notwithstanding that the hearing of objections is pending. This legalises the board's action in rating new areas without representation and for a period when these were not under the boards jurisdiction.
