FARMERS AND THE SLUMP. During the hearing of the shearers’ dispute in the Arbitration Court at Wellington, Mr. C. iW. Prime, .. who appeared for ,the employers, deprecated a suggestion .that had - been , made by the other , side that the increase in wool prices last season had made up tho leeway, since the.slump. . “The. i shearers’ representative,” said Mi’. Prime, “wants tfie Court to say that because the wool, prices last season were, higher than those of the previous season tho rates of. pay should bo , increased. I thought it was common knowledge that in.spito of tho increased prices farmers have not made up> the leeway caused during (lie slump poriod. Taxes are still very high, ~ the farmer carries tho burden of the land tax, and his debit balances are still higher than they were prior to the slump.” Mr. Prime added that he could call ample evidence to substantiate his declaration.
