(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this, day. A lire destroyed a five-roomed house at Takapuna owned by Mrs. Riff tern and .occupied by Mr. McCarolo and liis family. Mr. ■ and Airs. AlcOarole, and three children got out with nothing but their night clothes. The house was insured for £750 in the Northern Assurance office, tho furniture for £750 in the Australian Provincial, and £4OO in the Northern office. WANGANUI,' this day. A man named Vowles, aged about 35 years, supposed to bo an Australian, with relatives in Adelaide, was seen to jump into the Alangamahu river on Friday. It is believed he was drowned, as the river was in high flood. Kitto’a woolshed, containing two hundred sheep, was destroyed by lire at Brunswick this morning. The sheep were burned to death. On Hie- casting vote of the Deputy Mayor (Mr A. Me Keller) tile, City Council rescinded a resolution adopting proportional representation. Of eight who voted for a continuance of the system, six were Libor, one Independent, and one a member of the Citizens’ Association, which secured a majority of the seats at the last election. The. City Council decided to charge 2/6 registration fee for bicycles, the fee to include a numbered rad reflector, a. quantity of which have been landed from England at a cost of s£d each. During the discussion it was stated that registration might, bo ineffective in checking theft, hut the reflectors; were necessary for traffic safety.
