SYDNEY, .May 8. The coal position is unchanged. The men claim they are locked out, and the owners deny this, and contend the pits are open for the men as soon as they choose to start, but they declare that the "Red" element, which has been responsible for frequent strikes during the last few years, must be got rid of. The secretary of the. Northern Coal Owners' Association states that there are only about eighty "Reds" among the whole 15,000 employees. The Northern Field Council of the Miners' Federation meets on Tuesday next to discuss future action.
