In the Salaman case, before the Appeal Court, Mr Jellicoe, for the appellant-, contended (1) that the issue of a writ of habeas corpus had been issued owing to misrepresentation and the suppression of facts; (2) that'the mother's custody of tho child- was legal and tho Court had! no jurisdiction to interfere with it by a- writ of habeas corpus. The custody of tho child was given to her by a deed of separation, between the parties, audi that deed had not been voided by a divorce or by anything else. Ho dealt at length with the evidence, and argument was still proceeding when tho Court adjourned. A conference is taking place at Wellington between the executives of the South Island Dairy Association, the National Dairy Association, and shipping companies l to consider shipping- arrangements aa to. freight for next year, In reply to Mr Witty, in tlie House, the Hon. I). H. Guthrie said he was favorable to the proposal to let. to adjoining tenants, vacant lands alongside railway lines, and so minimise the risk of fire endangering neighboring plantations. He would inquire whether there was any departmental objection to the proposal.
