THE MAYOR'S PROPOSALS'

Several proposals for the relief of, unemployment in Gisborne are to be placed before the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works by the Mayor (M>* G. Wildish), who leaves to-morrow night for Wellington. Mr Wildish intends to make strenuous endeavors for the reinstatement of the Public'Works grant of £250 for work on Kaiti Hill. This grant-was patron the estimates, but subsequently revoked;*., and now ia considered an opportune tinie to secure this money if , possible' and use .it for ■providing work for unemployed on the Kaiti Hill park. , r Mr, Wildish. explained to-day that a sum .of imotiey, about £IOO, was available for .this work from the Magistrate's fund, and he,, hoped to arrange foi\ 10 men to: be.started on the work 'to-morrow:, He was arranging a committee of three who were in a, position'.to select,lo men mosk-deserving of such,relief .work.. '-Men .seeking employment have -been'r.asked.vto assemble at the Cook monument', when this convnittee will make its selection. The work which, it is proposed to put in hand \vill consist of tree planting on the Tines of the report of Mr P. M. Page,- >,Government Forestry Officer. The 'work will be for married men, particularly those who are not ■ capable of doing heavy 'work. Mr Wildish points out that if he succeeds in securing the grant of £250, work will be available for a greater number of men. While in Wellington Mr Wildish also intends to endeavor to arrange a £ for £ subsidy for money spent-in providing labor on the Waikanae beach..

. There was also the proposal/to construct a breastwork along the river bank from the William Pettie bridge to the Kaiti bridge, as part of the war memorial monument scheme. He intended to suggest to the Minister that the Government should- provide money for labor for this woriv, if the public found the materials required.
